Each stem is an investigation into the politics and materiality of light-mediated practices. With installations, AV performances, workshops, and public demonstrations, he searches for tactics and tricks to critically approach non-human agents, legal systems and spaces. Every piece of technological device secretly encloses a history of decisions, usually made up by dominant ideologies at the time of their design. By dissecting them, one can gain an understanding of how these devices shape their medium of operation, thus revealing their non-human agency. At the moment, Luca is working with the themes of surveillance cinema &amp; algorithmic bias, media archeology and new materialism. Finally, a current interest is organizing guerilla acts, such as public projections and hacking devices as an insurgence weapon and call to action against the rise of far-right extremism. Since the invention of text, it has functioned to flatten out a plurality of worlds from history, performing domination, differentiation and justifying violence. Marginalia&nbsp;takes selected texts in different historical contexts, and transforms them in experimental annotations engraved in canonical books. The resulting visual language communicates semiotics of displacement and a cartography manufactured by hegemonic world views. As a performance, layers of text, speech, and distortion presents a writing machine as sonic warfare. Marginalia is a research-based project and work in progress, where the goal remains to collect textual samples that shaped history and territory. Currently, its installation version features five books and a library of laser animations. The live performance builds on them, adding field recordings of historical speeches and the development of sound effects to translate the experimental annotations into audio. We live in a moment where with only a small basket containing a soda, vegan meat, and dark chocolate, one manages to fund three different genocides in the Global South, in addition to palm oil extraction sourced from illegal plantations in Brazil - likely some child labor involved. The price label reads “3+1 gratis”. In a world like this, a supermarket becomes an interface: it mediates individuals to global injustices, and the costs of the deforestation of indigenous land, for instance, are reflected in the final price written on the labels. Image credits: Christy Westhovens freE-ink exploits the vulnerabilities of Electronic Shelf Labels (ESL) commonly found in supermarkets, shifting the agency from wholesale retailers to shop-goers. The project is both an artistic research using everyday IoT devices and a call to action: I urge audiences to acquire an ESL, hack and place it in a location bearing activist messages to other consumers. As an intervention, freE-ink seeks not only to appropriate the devices used by major supermarket chains but also the very aesthetics of price tags to stimulate awareness in mass product consumption.
